The City of Pittsburgh has unveiled a comprehensive transportation plan called MovePGH, a 25-year strategy that includes a multi-modal plan, a street design manual, and a bike/pedestrian plan.
The plan intends to be a blueprint that will coordinate and prioritize investments that impact transportation, land use, and the environment. Over the next year, MovePGH will gather input from the public in an effort to figure out the best way to engineer new transportation needs into an existing, aging infrastructure.
MovePGH is one component of a comprehensive and massive plan for the city, with addresses open space, preservation, the arts, design, energy use, housing, economic development, infrastructure, planning, zoning, and—of course—transportation.
According to PlanPGH.com, the transportation plan is critical, as people are flocking to the urban core of the city, offsetting what had been a trend towards the suburbs. As a result, enhanced transit, biking and walking options will be required to achieve efficiency and capacity needs.
You can see all the details of how the transportation plans is evolving at the Web site of the city’s comprehensive plan, PlanPGH.com. There, the city has posted outreach calendars and other interactive tools to engage all stakeholders.
The city has even provided what it calls interactive visual “morphs” that illustrate the transformation.
