Mayors Steve Adler of Austin, Texas, Charlie Hales of Portland, Ore., and Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., toured Copenhagen, Denmark; Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Oslo, Norway with U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. The DoT Safer Streets mayors are considering how bus systems and bike infrastructure to better connect their communities and had the opportunity to experience that first hand.
The three mayors are part of the Mayors’ Challenge for Safer People, Safer Streets, a 2014 initiative U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) initiative to make biking and walking in cities safer. The secretary and the mayors took to bikes to experience how residents of the smart European capitals move about. They also looked at how the cities are using data and technology to improve transportation systems, according to Mass Transit..
The cities we visited with Secretary Foxx showed us what is possible, and we are eager to incorporate these ideas into a future for American cities that provides ladders of opportunity for everyone,” said Mayor Adler.
