The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced the 2016 Fostering Advancements in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-term Achievement of National Efficiencies (FASTLANE) program grants for 18 infrastructure projects. About $800 million will support $3.6 billion in infrastructure investment in 15 states and the District of Columbia.

The grants program is the result of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, a program that is designed to give critical road, rail and port projects funding certainty.

From eliminating traffic bottlenecks and enhancing port capacity to overhauling a major freight corridor, the 18 inaugural FASTLANE grants will enable people and goods to move more efficiently,” said Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx.

Much of USDOT’s recent initiatives are based on its 2015 report, Beyond Traffic 2045: Trends and Choices, a 30-year framework that outlines changing patterns, including population and employment growth in burgeoning megaregions and growth in freight movement by ton and value. The FASTLANE grants program is dedicated funding for projects that address these critical needs.
