What is it?
The application period for the second round of the 100 Resilient Cities Challenge is now open. Founded by Rockefeller Foundation, 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) is dedicated to helping cities around the world prepare to withstand any number of potential natural and man-made catastrophes in the future
In 2013, the inaugural class of 32 cities was selected to form the first part of this network. 100RC is seeking applications from additional cities this year to facilitate information-sharing and build a core global practice of resilience among governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and individual citizens.
The Details.
The Foundation wants to create durable cities that will share ideas on how to deal with rising sea levels, worsening storms, draughts, famine, blackouts and other problems. In addition to organizing regular conferences and meetings in member cities, the money will go toward creating disaster preparedness plans and hiring a chief risk officer for each of the 100 cities.
The Finalists identified during the 2014 100 Resilient Cities Challenge will be eligible to receive:
- Funding in the form of a grant to hire a Chief Resilience Officer.
- Technical support to develop a holistic resilience strategy that reflects each city’s distinct needs.
- Access to an innovative platform of services to support strategy development and implementation.
- Platform partners come from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, and will offer tools in areas such as innovative finance, technology, infrastructure, land use, and community and social resilience.
- Membership in the 100 Resilient Cities network to share knowledge and practices with other member cities.
The actual form and amount of awards will be determined at the discretion of 100 Resilient Cities. The deadline to apply is September 10, 2014. For more information and the application, visit www.100resilientcities.org.
