While water levels subside in flooded Iowa, yesterday the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reported 30 confirmed breaches on levees south of Council Bluffs, Iowa, according to the Des Moines Register.
At dams, USACE is working to release water as needed. The agency’s Northwestern Division reported Gavins Point dam releases would reach 20,000 cfs today:
Continued snow melt in South Dakota and precipitation forecasted for the upcoming weekend raises the likelihood of additional flooding and potential new evacuations.
Hydrologist David Pearson with the National Weather Service in Omaha said he expects a secondary rise of an additional 1 to 2 feet by April 1st.
I think we should be vigilant to that for the next month, possibly more,” Perason said.
