The Historical Society of Central Florida assumed the responsibility of preserving thousands of artifacts and memorial items that were created in response to the June 12, 2016, Pulse Nightclub tragedy. The organization has created a mass shooting archive of more than 5,000 tributes.
The goal is to create a comprehensive historical record of the event for current and future generations. An online component is available for viewers, and also to collect additional details about artifacts.
Orange County’s Regional History Center has collected, photographed, cataloged and preserved items from numerous public memorial sites for the Pulse nightclub tragedy throughout Central Florida.
According to NBC News, each item was assigned a number, photographed and placed into acid-free paper and boxes. Staff created custom compartments for some items. A selection of items is on display at the museum, and a searchable website went live on the one year anniversary of the mass shooting.
Each victim’s name is listed in alphabetical order so pictures and items left for them can be easily searched. The center is also hope that by curating a photo gallery online as part of the One Orlando Collection Initiative, people may be able to contribute missing details to help complete the mass shooting archive.
