The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently announced that it will open the FY13 round of its Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 8 A.M. EST. The primary goal of the AFG program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and emergency medical service organizations. Grants are available for equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

What’s New in FY13?

Cost sharing under FY13 round of AFG funding is based on the population protected by the grantee. The cost-share breakdown for 2013 is as follows:

  • Fire departments and non-affiliated EMS organizations serving populations of over 1M = 15% of the total project cost.
  • Fire departments and non-affiliated EMS organizations serving populations between 20,000 and 1M = 10% percent of the total project cost.
  • Fire departments and non-affiliated EMS organizations serving areas with a population of 20,000 or fewer = 5% of the total project cost.

Applicants may submit up to three applications to this grant program, one to each grant program area. The application period for the AFG Program is expected to close December 6, 2013 at 5 P.M. EST.
